Auditions for Fall 2025 will occur for prospective students on Tuesday, May 6th and Thursday, May 8th,2025 from 5:00PM-7:00PM at Almeta Crawford High School. Auditions for current Crawford Orchestras students will occur during their prescribed Final Exam time during the final week of school. Re-chair auditions for all orchestras will occur upon return from the Summer Break.
All students are recommended to their current orchestras, prospective students are recommended to Cambiata (Sub-Non-Varsity ensemble) automatically, and a successful audition may enable students to be accepted into the prestigious and rigorous Sinfonia Orchestra (Varsity ensemble).
CAMBIATA ORCHESTRA students are expected to perform literature at a Grade 1-2 level and sightread at a Level 2 (meets during 1st period).
PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA students are expected to perform literature at a Grade 2-3 level and sightread at a Level 3 (meets during 3rd period).
SINFONIA ORCHESTRA students are expected to perform literature at a Grade 4-5 level and sightread at a Level 4 (meets during 2nd period).
Auditions will consist of three parts:
SCALE
ETUDE
LEVEL EXCERPT
SCALE
Students are required to perform a pre-prescribed scale of at least two-octaves as part of the audition process. The successful performance of a three or four-octave scale may enable students to score higher.
ETUDE
Students will be required to perform a short excerpt prescribed to each instrument at the indicated tempo. Students may or may not be instructed to perform a cute of the excerpt, but regardless it is the responsibility of the student to prepare the entire excerpt.
LEVEL EXCERPT
Students will be required to prepare one of three level excerpts that best display their talents. Each level is chosen to embody the rigor required of each ensemble’s repertoire. Students may or may not be instructed to perform a cut from this excerpt - regardless, students must prepare the entire chosen excerpt to a performance-level.
AUDITION PROCEDURE
Students will check-in at least 15 minutes before their scheduled audition with the monitor. Students will then be informed of any excerpt cuts and the scale to be performed. Students may then use our practice rooms to prepare before their audition. Students will report for their audition at least 5 minutes before their time begins. Once the student enters the Orchestra Hall, the student will not engage with the audition panel and head straight to the audition chair and stand. The student will then play the required scale and excerpt - there is no memory requirement and students are free to use their music. Once a student finishes their audition, they will exit silently through the exit doors (not the one students entered the room). Students will receive their audition results via email by the end of May.
